Tata group's climate change initiative only 3 yr old: Irani

AHMEDABAD: Tata Sons director J J Irani , who oversees the environment efforts of all Tata group companies , today said that they began their initiatives to tackle climate change only three years ago.

"Our energy resources and its usage is skewed because we have developed energy based largely on fossil fuel. Usage of fossil fuel has a very polluting effect on the earth and if not curtailed it will affect the future generation," Irani said after formally launching the Solar Energy Association of Gujarat (SEAG) consisting of those business houses involved in solar sector.

"We woke up five or may be three years ago to face the challenges before us," Irani said in reply to a query on initiatives by Tata Group for tackling climate change.

"To make improvement one has to know where they are. So we did carbon mapping for our companies and found out that five of our companies were responsible for almost 90 per cent of our carbon emissions. Those are steel, motors, chemicals and power," he said.

"Fifth surprisingly was the TCS ( Tata Consultancy Services )). There were two reasons for that one that there people are constantly travelling, thereby adding to their carbon foot prints," Irani said.

"Second there is lot of computation in their facilities which generate lot of heat that in turns requires a lot of cooling. Therefore generating carbon foot print," he added.
